Grow tables are the norm in professional horticulture. Not only do they offer an ergonomic working height, but above all they contribute to healthier plant growth. As the plants are not directly on the ground, their roots are less exposed to the cold. The biggest advantage, however, is that a grow table can be easily integrated into an automatic watering system. These systems always consist of a water tank in which the nutrient solution is prepared, a drip tray on which the plants are grown, and a pump. This can be a system where the drip tray is periodically filled with a layer of nutrient solution and then drained again. Ebb and flow. Or a drip irrigation system in which the plants receive a number of waterings per day via a system of drippers.
An automatic watering system can consist of a single table but is infinitely expandable with multiple tables.

A simple drip irrigation system in which water is pumped from the water tank under the table to the pots via a system of drippers. Any excess water drains out from the bottom of the pots and returns to the water tank to be reused.
Ebb and flow trays
Grow tables are always used in conjunction with special ebb and flow trays or Danish trays. These are plastic drip trays with a raised rim and drainage channels that converge into a deeper sump. The nutrient solution that runs out from the bottom of the substrate after watering is drained away here. This can be to a drain (drain-to-waste system) or back to the water tank from which it was originally pumped to the plant, a ‘recirculating’ system. This drainage of the substrate means that the plants are never left standing in a pool of water. Healthy root growth requires not only a healthy water balance but also a good oxygen balance. With every watering, the water displaces the oxygen from the substrate. Because the excess water simply drains away via the gutters after each watering, the substrate can easily re-saturate with fresh oxygen.
Suitable for any substrate
A grow table with a drip tray is suitable for growing on any substrate. This can include pots with soil or coconut fibre, rockwool mats, or cubes. A drip irrigation system where each plant is watered individually is most commonly used for this purpose. For growing young plants in plugs, an ebb and flow system is most commonly used. This is also the most common method when growing microgreens on cellulose growing mats.
